Evelyn first appeared in Winnipeg several years ago with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, then started a collaboration with Vincent Ho. Audiences response grew with each appearance. I have been at all Evelyn's performances. I also follow one of the best percussionist in Rock - Brent Fitz and ditto.
This 22nd NMF 2013, I did several photo shoots with Evelyn - receptions, on stage, back stage, dressing room and post concert parties. I just read the online posting from 'Tom Tom' as she talked about music, noise, vibrations and learning her specific performance styles. Being part of this years' NMF 2013 in a very new way (manager of the first NMF Facebook page) I see the potential for media explosion that connects the NMF audiences and people with the NMF entity. I know the direction by special people doing things not done before - from Pop Nuit moving much of the onstage chat back to the individual audience member to get the information as needed - online and after the concerts. Steve Reich made himself so available after concert performances for a Q and A from the audience gathering in the Piano loft.
As I said to the WSO last week, the NMF online activities I manage will continue from this NMF and will be layered into the 23rd NMF 2014. For me, I decided to start the Blog now instead of waiting to next Fall once the NMF program is launched - because Evelyn and Steve and Peter~Anthony and Christos and Gareth and Vincent are still in your minds after the curtain drops.
My 'attitude change' started in Vancouver last October in a conversation with Eric Whitacre the night before the concert at the Orpheum where he and Jon Washburn conducted the Vancouver Chamber Choir. Our focus, aside from my of discussion of choral music, was the absolute necessity of Arts groups being online with more than a static webage if they wanted to survive in the new culture. Baazang! Then came the meeting with Alexander to start this ASAP - (yes the meeting was at a Starbucks).
This Blog post lets you get into the middle of it - express how Evelyn Glennie and Steve Reich and everyone at the NMF raised your interest in being at a live concert, your lasting reflections of a revealing moment. So, how does New Music, especially live performances, affect you - both on impact and afterglow? Post it up.
